Administration and support can include the following:
Disaster Recovery
Successful Disaster recovery requires a good disaster recovery plan. Any plan would be derived from a comprehensive risk analysis. It involves planning for a disaster and asking lots of 'what if' type questions. Many peoples attitude Disaster Recovery planning is to simply bury thier head in the sand and not ask the questions! The first step in disaster recovery planning is to have clear responsibility. Often it is assumed that somebody else has made backups or will know what to do. If you don't know the answer to the question 'who responsible for our disaster recovery plans" then you could be in trouble.
Consider how long it would take to reconstruct your website from scratch. That could involve not only restoring the actual pages and programs that constitute your website but also the data that enables it to function correctly. Who would do this for you? Is it somebody inside your organisation or an outside contractor?
Remember, while your website is out of action any visitors to your website may also get the impression your business out of action or no longer in existance.
User Access and Privileges
Controlling access through passwords and privileges is a basic security barier. Only those with a need for a particular privilage should be granted it and then only while they need it. This can help reduce the risks of unauthorised access.
Monitoring
Monitoring who uses the site, where they come from, which areas they visit and when can not only feed back to marketing initiatives but also detect those with malicious intent.
Udates and Upgrades
Carrying out routine upgrades and updates can be an arduous task. If a procedure isn't followed correctly updates can fail and leave your system in a state of non-functioning limbo. Can the situation be recovered? Do you need to regress to the older version until the problem is identified? Any of these questions unresolved can leave you without a functioning website.
